Description

Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic prescription medication used to treat infections caused by several different microorganisms in dogs, cats, and small animals. The drug is often prescribed to dogs for heartworm disease, Lyme disease, anaplasma (tick-borne), periodontal disease (teeth and gum) Toxoplasma, and Neorickettsia helminthoeca (salmon poisoning). Doxycycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, which means it can fight multiple types of bacteria such as E.coli, urinary tract infections, and chlamydia.
In cats, it is used to treat infections caused by a variety of bacteria such as Anaplasma, Bartonella, Hemoplasma, Chlamydia felis, and Toxoplasma.
A tetracycline antibiotic works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This antibiotic only treats bacterial infections and not viral infections.
Help treat your pets’ infections and give them a healthier life with Doxycycline. All our medications are made in our state-of-the-art pharmacy lab in Arizona, USA.

Uses

Doxycycline compounded oral liquid is given by mouth in liquid form once daily preferably with food since this drug may upset the stomach. It is best to give with small amounts of food that do not contain dairy or iron products. This medication should take effect in about 1 or 2 hours, and noticeable effects could take up to a few days.
Do not give doxycycline with calcium supplements, multivitamins, antacids, or laxatives for 2 hours before or after dosing. These products can reduce the effectiveness of the drug.
This medication should be given just as your veterinarian prescribes. It must be measured carefully, and it's best to use the syringe provided to ensure you are able to give the proper dosage required. After dosing your pet, rinse and dry the syringe, and screw the cap tightly onto the bottle.
Doxycycline is a prescription medication for treating bacterial infections in cats and dogs. If you have difficulty giving it to your pet, contact your veterinarian for some helpful tips. We recommend washing your hands with soap and water after handling any medication.

Possible Side Effects

Doxycycline compounded oral liquid is generally safe, however, the most common side effects can include diarrhea, vomiting, lack of appetite, or anorexia. Your pet can also experience skin sensitivity to sunlight and might sunburn as a result.
More serious side effects can include seizures, bleeding, yellowing of the skin, upset stomach, trouble swallowing, or behavioral changes when dosing the medication.
If you give this medication with food, it may help some of these side effects without reducing the drug absorption. This medication should stop working within 24 hours, however, effects can last longer in pets with kidney or liver disease.
Contact your veterinarian immediately if these side effects or allergic reactions continue or become more severe.

Drug & Food Interactions

Drug Interactions: If your pet is on any of the following medications you should use Doxycycline with caution:

  • Aluminum, Calcium, and Magnesium-Containing Oral Products: When orally administered, tetracyclines can chelate divalent or trivalent cations which can then decrease the absorption of the tetracycline or other drugs if it contains these cations. Oral products that contain aluminum, calcium, or magnesium cations are most commonly associated with this interaction. Even though doxycycline has a relatively low attraction for calcium ions, it is recommended that all oral tetracyclines be given at least 1 to 2 hours before or after any cation-containing product.
  • Ascorbic Acid (e.g. Vitamin C):When combined may result in decreased doxycycline efficacy.
  • Bismuth Subsalicylate:When combined may reduce absorption of tetracyclines; it is recommended that all oral tetracyclines be given at least 1 to 2 hours before or after bismuth subsalicylate.
  • Enrofloxacin:Using Enrofloxacin and doxycycline together can reduce and delay enrofloxacin in vitro activity against Escherichia coli. Bactericidal effects were better with concomitant administration than when separated by 12 hours.
  • Iron, Oral:Iron salts should be given 3 hours before, or 2 hours after the tetracycline dose. Oral iron products are associated with decreased tetracycline absorption
  • Kaolin/Pectin:When combined with doxycycline may reduce the absorption of tetracyclines; it is recommended that all oral tetracyclines be given at least 1 to 2 hours before or after kaolin/pectin.
  • Penicillins:When combined with doxycycline bacteriostatic drugs (e.g. tetracyclines) it may interfere with bactericidal activity of penicillins, cephalosporins, and aminoglycosides.
  • Phenobarbital:When combined may decrease doxycycline half-life and reduce levels.
  • Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIS) (e.g. omeprazole, pantoprazole): When combined may reduce oral bioavailability of doxycycline.
  • Sucralfate: When combined with doxycycline, concomitant sucralfate reduces peak doxycycline concentration and overall exposure in dogs. No interaction occurred when sucralfate was administered 2 hours after doxycycline.
  • Warfarin: When combined with doxycycline tetracyclines may depress plasma prothrombin activity, and patients receiving anticoagulant (e.g. warfarin) therapy may need a dosage adjustment.
  • Zinc:When combined, tetracyclines can decrease the absorption of tetracycline or the other drug if it contains zinc. It is recommended that all oral tetracyclines be given at least 1 to 2 hours before or after the zinc-containing product.

Precautions

Doxycycline should not be given to pets that are allergic, hypersensitive to it, or are breeding. It should not be given to animals that are pregnant. It should be used with caution in pets with liver disease or younger pets that are developing teeth and bones.

Monitoring

Your veterinarian will likely monitor your pet to make sure the medication is working, and for any side effects such as vomiting, diarrhea, or anorexia.
